Medieval Markets and Migration: Paris c. 1300
Nathan Sussman, Full Professor, International Economics & Pictet Chair in Finance and Development, Geneva Graduate Institute,

Abstract: This seminar presents original research on migration to Paris circa 1300 CE, utilizing the uniquely detailed tax records (Tallies) raised to pay Philip the Fair. We begin by documenting the scale of migration to Paris and examine the diverse origins of migrants and immigrants, their occupational choices, and their residential patterns within the city. The findings challenge conventional understandings of medieval urban development by revealing a surprisingly high level of diversity and integration of migrants and foreigners into Parisian society and their substantial contribution to the city's economy and tax base.
